Scheme: Thirlmere Aqueduct Routine Maintenance

Problem: Asset Deterioration likely to affect Water Quality

Solution: Planned Maintenance during Aqueduct Outage

Following aqueduct inspections carried out in 2005, the Thirlmere Aqueduct was shutdown for planned maintenance works over a period of four weeks in October 2006.

Ram Services Limited provided several specialist teams of confined space operations trained operatives to work within selected lengths of the aqueduct tunnel in order to carry out a variety of maintenance tasks that included the following;

  • Establishment of forced ventilation
  • Further inspection works
  • Stemming of water ingress
  • Concrete repairs
  • Replacement of pressure relief valves
  • Localised grouting
  • Installation of temporary propping
  • Pressure pointing of brickwork

Work was undertaken at isolated, hard to get to locations, and despite the worst of lakeland autumn weather, all planned works were completed within the allotted time.
