Crack in vacuum column

Preston Cattle Market
Storm Water Detention Tank

Concern regarding difficulties in the operation of the vacuum flushing column within the 20m diameter, 20m deep detention tank lead to the discovery of cracks and deterioration to joint seals between precast concrete sections forming the column.

Ram Services technical staff were asked to develop a scheme to provide safe access to the column in the underground tank, and to make good the deterioration, which was preventing a vacuum from being formed within the column, essential to the cleansing of the tank floor following a period of storm water detention.

Suspended access platform in storm water tank

INFORMATION

Using a specially developed suspended access cradle, Ram Services operatives successfully identified and filled a number of cracks, and then ground back exuded joint sealant material before sealing the surface of the concrete rings with a lightly filled epoxy  resin paste.

The entire surface of the 3.3m diameter column, was then sealed with a four coat, 2mm thick elastomeric polyurethane coating to prevent ingress of air through the concrete rings reducing the vacuum within the column.

Gas tight polyurethane coating applied to top of column
