Joint Repair and Sealing

Movement affects all structures to varying degrees and can be caused by temperatures changes, shrinkage, settlement, loading etc.  Provision to accommodate such movement needs to be provided at expansion joints at appropriate intervals.  Where movement in excess of this occurs, by design  or otherwise, other joint finishing techniques are required.

Many expansion joints are finished with poured or gun applied mastic sealants, but these can only accommodate movement up to around 30% of the joint gap width.

In many structures this causes difficulties in that joints need to be sealed to prevent weather ingress or to provide containment for water, effluent, flowing solids, whilst still allowing movement to take place.

In conjunction with approved suppliers, Ram Services Limited offer a wide range of mechanical and non-mechanical expansion joint finishing solutions for use on footbridges, road bridges, multi-storey car parks, aqueducts, podium decks, water retaining structures, and architectural finishes etc.

We also install more conventional mastic type sealants, using materials selected for movement capability, speed of cure, chemical resistance etc.

INFORMATION

In addition to the sealing of joints with conventional mastic type sealants, we provide a range of solutions for more onerous requirements where relative movements or other service needs exceed those accommodated by mastic materials -

  • Joints in water retaining structures including reservoirs and storm water tanks
  • Joints in footbridge and car parks
  • Renewal of joint nosings on sewage treatment tank walls with especially developed elastomeric mortar

Examples of Past Work

Sealing of joints in storm water tanks at Preston for United Utilities where to large movements occurred due to location adjacent to tidal river

Sealing of joints in sewage aeration tanks in Grimsby for Anglian Water where large movements occurred as a result of structural movement

Installation of replacement elastomeric sealing elements to highway bridge in Stockport after original rubber seals had failed

Installation of new nosing mortar and sealant to joints in walls of waste water settlement tanks to enable continued running of scraper bridges
